Mexico rules & how to play

Ordinary pairs, doubles, then highest 21. Compare two-dice ranks and preserve your lives.

Updated October 23, 2026. Based on the Version 1.1 implementation. Values illustrate standard or preset rules; your active settings take precedence.

Objective and setup

Play with 2–6 seats. Other seats are CPU opponents. Choose player count, individual CPU difficulty and rules before starting.

Pairs rather than sums

Read the larger face first. Ordinary pairs 31–65 come below doubles 11–66, then highest 21. Double one beats ordinary 65; 21 beats double six. Swapping the dice does not change the rank.

Keep or reroll both

Everyone gets the same roll limit. You cannot keep just one die. A reroll replaces the pair, and the final kept pair is compared. Rerolling 21 is legal, but no stronger pair exists.

Mexico occurrences and life losses

After everyone finishes, all tied lowest players lose one life. If 21 appeared at any point in the round, the standard loss is two. Rerolling 21 does not remove the effect; repeated occurrences do not increase it beyond two. Rolling 21 grants no extra life.

Simultaneous losses and draws

Apply losses to every tied-lowest player simultaneously and clamp lives at zero. The last survivor wins; everyone at zero is a draw. If everyone kept 21, everyone is also tied lowest and loses two under the standard setting.

Leader and settings

Next leader is the first surviving tied-lowest player in turn order. If all lowest players are eliminated, use the next survivor after the old leader. Choose 2–6 players, 2, 3 or 6 lives, 1, 2 or 3 rolls, and the double penalty on or off.

Rank order (low → high)

31 < 32 < 41 < 42 < 43 < 51 < 52 < 53 < 54 < 61 < 62 < 63 < 64 < 65 < 11 < 22 < 33 < 44 < 55 < 66 < 21. These are pair names, not points.

Example & practice

21 outranks double six.

⚁⚀

This is not 2+1=3 points. Pair 21 is highest. Under standard rules, any 21 during the round makes the loss two lives for every tied-lowest player.

Does rerolling 21 remove the double penalty?

No. It stays active for that round. Repeated 21s do not increase the loss beyond two.
